Forgotten felt like just another one of the many young-adult debuts being released this year. I saw mixed reviews, and I was pretty sure it would be a disappointment for me. But I once I was pulled in, my thoughts changed. Forgotten has so much more to it, and I felt such a deep connection to the characters, it was hard to let go.
I'm not entirely sure how Cat Patrick was able to do it, but I felt like I really got to know London.
London Lane has a condition. She can't remember her past. At exactly 4:33 AM, everyday, her mind resets itself, leaving her memory blank. She doesn't remember what assignments are due that day, she doesn't even remember what she wore to school the day before.
But she 'remembers' snippets of the future. She sees things that will happen, like her best friend's 'mistake' that will take things to the police, or a funeral for someone she knows.
The funeral that London keeps seeing in her dreams is what causes her to find out more about her father, and another close relative she never knew about - or doesn't remember.
The aspect of London Lane's condition was unique. Even London herself was unique. I enjoyed getting to know her and finding out more about her past just as she did. I will definitely be on the lookout for what Cat Patrick has in store for us next!
I guess the cover is... okay, but I can't say I love it. But without the dust jacket, it's really pretty!
I was really excited about this book, but I feel like I wanted to like it more than I did. Don't get me wrong, I did really like it, but it felt kind of rushed at the end. That huge twist (which I won't spoil for others) almost felt like it didn't belong. Well, I mean that the book seemed to be leading up to a different climax. And once it happened, I felt like the author was trying to fit everything in a short period of time (since the climax takes place so late). I did love the characters though, I see what you mean about London. I, personally, loved Luke. My review will be up soon (wednesday).

ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about the cover! I love the Australian version, but the US is okay. Without the dust jacket, it is gorgeous! I love how the texture and colors are different than most, blank covers
I just read and reviews Forgotten, as well. I loved, loved, loved this book. It's so different from anything out there! I agree with Britta, though, the ending was... weird. It felt like it was kind of tacked on. The story at the end could have been an entirely different book if Patrick wanted to write it that way.

I can't wait to read this book. It sounds really good. I must say that I much prefer the UK cover though with the two girls sitting back to back.

ReplyDeleteI had difficulties staying invested with the characters. Something just kept drawing me out. I couldn't relate to what was happening. An off one for me.
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I was really nervous about reading Forgotten, but it was totally worth it. I really liked London Lane, especially her name, and she had a way of drawing me into the story and keeping me on my toes :)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the story, there were some points on the memory loss that bugged me. It was weird how it only effected her remembering the events of a day and nothing else. The fact that she could see the future was strange and at times I didn't really understand how it worked. In the end, I resigned myself to not think about them because I don't think they are important to the story and would cause me not to enjoy it. I was also annoyed that we never figure out why she couldn't see Luke in her future and that's why she could never remember him. Then he sets off all sorts of triggers to help her remember her past which leads to his place in her future so she does remember him. It was weird and confused me.
