Win CIRCLE OF FIRE by Michelle Zink!

It wasn’t until I started blogging did I realize I had missed out on the epicness of Michelle Zink’s Prophecy of the Sisters and Guardian of the Gate. Now I’m dying for the third book: Circle of Fire.

Luckily for you, I’m giving away (on behalf of Michelle Zink) a signed hardcover copy of Circle of Fire to one lucky winner!

First, let’s get to know the author a bit :)

IceyBooks: Who is your favorite character in The Prophecy trilogy?

Michelle ZinkMichelle Zink: Gah! Impossible to choose. That’s like asking me to choose a favorite child. Of course, I adore Lia for her goodness and strength, but the thing that appeals to me the most is that she isn’t perfect. As the trilogy progresses, we see her struggle with the darker parts of herself, as we all do. She has to face up to her own lack of compassion and forgiveness even as she struggles to balance that with the need to protect herself and the ones she loves. I also love Alice for her complexity (which you also see more of in the last book) and her sadness. Even though I want to throttle her sometimes, there’s a huge part of me that just want to love her. It was a challenge creating both sisters, because I wanted them to be relatable in the way that real people are – a combination of good and bad, light and dark. From a craft perspective, I needed to keep Lia sympathetic ENOUGH (because she is the story’s protagonist) without making her perfect and I needed Alice to be evil ENOUGH without making her a carbon-cutout villain. I’ll never forget either of them. At the same time, Luisa is funny and makes me laugh out loud while Sonia has such a good, gentle heart. And then there is Dimitri… Nom, nom, nom! Need I say more? ;)

IceyBooks: What was the best part about “becoming” a published author?

Michelle Zink: Honestly, the two things that matter most to me are being able to write as much as I want and connecting with teens in a meaningful way. And while the politically correct answer to the “Did you always want to be published?” question is, “Not at all. It’s always been about the craft (or the story or whatever),” for me publication was ALWAYS the goal because that meant I could spend all of my time writing instead of spending 10-12 hours a day in a job I hated. I also love meeting and talking to teens. Being invited into their lives, talking to them about reading, writing, and life… well, it’s such a responsibility and a privilege. Touring is fun. Talking with other writers is fun. Working in my pajamas and Uggs is fun. But to this day, nothing means as much to me as the writing and my readership.

IceyBooks: If you weren’t an author, what would you have been?

Michelle Zink: Ha! What HAVEN’T I been? I’ve been a daycare provider, a sales person, an management executive, and an antique dealer. But if I could CHOOSE any other career (and absolutely COULDN’T have writing, which will always be my first love), I would have liked to be an actress or a musician. I just love those creative mediums so much.

IceyBooks: Now tell us a little bit about yourself.

Michelle Zink: Wow… that’s your toughest question yet. And I’m not even being sarcastic! Let’s see… I’m a music and film fanatic and a single mom of four kids ages 11-18. I have an insatiable curiosity about EVERYTHING, which is probably related to my writing. I love to experience new things and learn new things and I’m very anti-stuff. When I spend money, it’s more likely on an experience (like going to a concert with my teens or taking a trip) than buying something. I’m very reclusive and spend most of my time hanging out in our little New York town with my kids and the houseful of teens we always seem to have over. We have strange traditions in our house, like watching a documentary every Sunday night, eating “fun food” on Fridays, and spending one whole day after Christmas watching three movies in a row at the theater in our post-Christmas Movie Marathon.

IceyBooks: What’s your favorite hobby (besides reading and writing)?

Michelle Zink: Writing is definitely my biggest hobby and spend most of time doing and thinking about things related to that. But I did recently buy myself a better camera and I’m having fun experimenting with photography now, too. I like movies A LOT and love watching and dissecting them with my kids. Oh, and I love to travel!

IceyBooks: What’s your favorite part of nature – the sky, trees, the earth…?

Circle of Fire (Prophecy of the Sisters, #3)Michelle Zink: I love it all. I feel so at peace when I’m out in nature. I do have a special fondness for water and trees, though. I use them both in meditation a lot. Water reminds me that things are always moving and changing and trees remind me that there is little we can do except stand solid no matter what’s happening around us. They go together! I remind myself to let the unimportant things pass while I stand firm.

IceyBooks: If you could go anywhere, where would you go, and what would you do?

Michelle Zink: If I could go anywhere, I’d go EVERYWHERE! I’m a serial mover. I love to move, but I haven’t moved in ten years because I want my kids to have roots here. So if I could go anywhere and do anything, I’d take some time and travel the world just being the nomad that I am! High on my list would be India, Egypt, Africa, Indonesia, Italy, France, England, Scotland, Ireland… well, I guess it’s just easier to say that there’s nowhere I WOULDN’T go!

IceyBooks: Thanks for taking the time to join us, is there anything else you would like to add?

Michelle Zink: Just a big thank you to everyone who reads and supports my work. By talking about the Prophecy trilogy and spreading the word, you give me the opportunity to do what I love most for a living. That is an immeasurable gift and one I don’t take for granted. I <3 you guys!
