Riley Blackthorne is beginning to learn that there are worse things than death by demon. And love is just one of them…

Seventeen-year-old Riley has about had it up to here. After the devastating battle at the Tabernacle, trappers are dead and injured, her boyfriend Simon is gravely injured, and now her beloved late father’s been illegally poached from his grave by a very powerful necromancer. As if that’s not enough, there's Ori, one sizzling hot freelance demon hunter who’s made himself Riley’s unofficial body guard, and Beck, a super over-protective “friend” who acts more like a grouchy granddad. With all the hassles, Riley’s almost ready to leave Atlanta altogether.

But as Atlanta’s demon count increases, the Vatican finally sends its own Demon Hunters to take care of the city’s “little” problem, and pandemonium breaks loose. Only Riley knows that she might be the center of Hell’s attention: an extremely powerful Grade 5 demon is stalking her, and her luck can't last forever…

As if being the only female demon trapper wasn't hard enough, all the demons know Riley Blackthorn by her name. It doesn't exactly help a girl fall sleep at night when Hell's minions know your name. But it seems that's the least of Riley's problems now. Someone has stolen her dad's body, someone with powerful magic. And she would do anything and everything to get it back. And then there are the new accusations... and Ori...

Riley is back in the second installment to Jana Oliver's The Demon Trapper's series. Soul Thief takes off right where The Demon Trapper's Daughter left off. And if we thought Riley's life was tough then, wait until you step into this one.

Jana Oliver sucks you in from the very first pages, keeping you glued until the last. I was having a difficult time keeping up with myself! Her descriptive prose has you seeing everything there is to see in future Atlanta. There wasn't as much action in this one as the first, but the plot was still intriguing and full of unexpected twists.

Riley is a wonderful character. Though her job is uncalledfor in real life, her worries are some we all have and more - bills, school, boys. Let's just say her problems are a little more... magnified ;) Though the novel is written in the third-person point of view, I liked the small thoughts we were able to catch glimpses of - for both Riley and Beck, and maybe a third, mysterious character I won't tell you of.

I was a bit disappointed with how some things turned out, though I can't complain - that's just how Oliver wanted things to turn out. But the twisted ending has me hanging from a thread. I have no idea how things will turn out for Riley - and there's only one way for me to find out.

I like the color and the font, but I'm not a fan of religious symbols
on YA fiction covers, so this one is a 'so-so' for me.

  5. I have the first one sitting on my shelf -- I really need to read it. The concept of this book is great and it sounds like the second book doesn't have the sophomore slump so many do.

  6. Awesome review! I can't wait to read this one, still have to buy it though! There are wayyy too many books that I want to read that just released this week and I still have a toppling TBR pile! This one might have to be near the top of this week's releases that I will eventually buy and read right away!

    Sorry for the rambling!

But your review makes me very excited for this one!

  8. I haven't had a chance to start this series yet, but it sounds very compelling! Glad you enjoyed it even though it didn't exactly work out the way you wanted it to. Sometimes that happens in the second book of a series, doesn't it? Great review :)
