HER WORLD IS CHANGED FOREVER
Callie lost her parents when the Spore Wars wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty and sixty. She and her little brother, Tyler, go on the run, living as squatters with their friend Michael and fighting off renegades who would kill them for a cookie. Callie’s only hope is Prime Destinations, a disturbing place in Beverly Hills run by a mysterious figure known as the Old Man.
He hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders—seniors who want to be young again. Callie, desperate for the money that will keep her, Tyler, and Michael alive, agrees to be a donor. But the neurochip they place in Callie’s head malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter, living in her mansion, driving her cars, and going out with a senator’s grandson. It feels almost like a fairy tale, until Callie discovers that her renter intends to do more than party—and that Prime Destinations’ plans are more evil than Callie could ever have imagined. . .
Lissa Price is an author to watch. Starters has been getting all the buzz in the Twitterverse, which only made me more eager to pick up the shiny galley I had sitting on my shelves. In a sentence: Starters is action-packed, with a plotline purely unique.
The plot had me all sorts of excited – a way for seniors to rent a teen body?? And though I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, there was still that certain factor I couldn’t shake off – the writing. The writing wasn’t what I would call flowing and beautiful. Some sentences were choppy and short in ways that made me cringe. That being said, I still found Starters captivating.
Sixteen year old Callie lives a life where futures for young, orphaned Starters (anyone under 20) are bleak. Her only reason for living is to protect her brother and make life better for the both of them. Enter Prime Destinations. You fall asleep, they pay you enough money to buy yourself a house. Sort of. What she doesn’t realize is that Prime Destinations is more sinister than she could have imagined. If you thought letting old people use your body was bad, you wouldn’t believe what they have planned.
Callie is strong. Her mind is set on protecting her brother, and there are no limits when it comes to doing her job. While she has her meager flaws, she’s a character we can feel for. Before going in, I was afraid the unique plot would have me baffled and confused – but no. Lissa Price masterfully explains everything without leaving you overwhelmed or turning the book upside down.
Like I said, Starters has been getting the buzz. The sequel, Enders, is expected to release this winter. With good reason. Lissa Price’s debut is intense, action-packed, and a world you’ll want to step into. The second book can’t come soon enough.
