Interview with Julie Kagawa – Author of The Iron Fey Series

You all know how much I enjoyed reading both The Iron King and The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa. I decided to get to know a little bit about the person behind The Iron Fey series, and I’m going to share it with you all!

IceyBooks: Describe The Iron Fey series in a few words for us.

Julie Kagawa: The Iron Fey focuses on a girl named Meghan Chase, and her adventures to stop the Iron Fey from destroying the Nevernever, all while dealing with her own half-fey heritage, and her feelings for a Winter Prince who says they can never be together.


IB: Where did you find the inspiration for The Iron Fey series?

JK: I’ve always loved faeries, but when I started The Iron King, I wanted to write something that was a little different. So I started thinking, what are the fey afraid of?  In myth and legends, the answer is iron. So, what if there were a type of faery that was immune to iron, and how would that affect the other fey? Then I remembered we already have ‘monsters’ in machines: gremlins and bugs and viruses and such. And from that thought, the Iron Fey were born.
IB: If you weren’t an author, what would you have become?

JK: Probably a dog trainer.  That was my job before I became a writer, and I enjoyed it a lot (but not as much as writing).

IB: Do you have any regrets regarding your books now that they’re “out there”?
JK: Not a one. I’m extremely grateful that my books have been published, and I wouldn’t change a thing.



IB: What’s your favorite hobby (besides writing)?

JK: I’m a huge video game geek. I have all three consoles (Wii, PS3, Xbox 360) and most of my free time is spent shooting aliens, running around with a sword trying to level up, or finding new ways to humiliate my Sims. I wear my geekdom proudly.  ;-)

    Awesome interview! Julie Kagawa is my favorite author so it's super cool that you had this interview! I love how she mentions playing video games. I love playing video games and I always check her blog for her Sims stories!

    This is a series I REALLY want to read and just haven't made it to yet. Now that I know more about the concept behind the books, it makes it that much more interesting. And I love it when writers are geeks/nerds just like me! :)
