Victoria Schwab
288 pages
Publisher: HyperionTeen
Release Date: August 2nd, 2011

The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.

And there are no strangers in the town of Near.

These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.

But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.

The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.

As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.

Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget.

  1. I've heard so many great things about The Near Witch. I love the idea of reading a book that is part fairy tale, part love story, and part nightmarish. I've never read a book like this, and I can imagine how genius it is!!!

All of my childhood I loved the idea of happily-ever-after, but I never thought to throw in a little mystery and spook into the mix. I bet this story is one that will be reread over and over again. :)

  2. Cover review? I have never done this before!

Well… The cover looks amazing… It's so white and blue that it caught my attention immediately… even though the cover art, in my opinion (I haven't read the book, so I don't know), is not related to what we can read about the story, I think it's really mysterious. The girl behind the veil, like she is trying to touch something or to find something makes me think that this book is going to be amazing and… creepy?
    I don't know… yet… : )
I give it 5/5. Great Cover!

    Thanks for the contest!

  3. I'm excited to read this book because a friend told me that this is one of the HOTTEST BOOK of 2011! Now who wouldn't be interested in that?

If I'm basing my review from the cover, then no doubt that it won me over! The cover is gorgeous! It is eye-catching and heart-catching!

  4. I have heard so much buzz about this book. I really want it. It seems like a creepy read, you know, one of those books that you have to read with the lights on. lol The cover is great and little haunted kids………..*sends shivers* Here's hoping I win me a copy and can feel the shivers myself.

  5. I don't think I have read a bad review about this so far and the mysterious and beautiful cover makes me want to get my hands on a copy of this even more.

  6. I would love to win a copy of Near Witch.

I'm like so many others and love witch stories, oh truth is I love a good Gothic story every once and awhile. I've really enjoyed the comeback of vampires, but seems to have saturated the market as of late and witches I think are on the comeback! I remember in school reading about the Salem witches, then Wicca got big in my adolescence…always been an interest of mine.

I love the cover. Makes me think of a young girl whose ready to lift the veil of innocence and adolescence and learn the truth that has been hidden from her.

  7. I've heard alot about the 'voice' or 'tone' of the language in this book and I'm looking forward to reading it. The author has been compared a couple of times with Neil Gaiman so that is also a plus. Also, I'm a cheapskate so I would like to win a copy rather than have to wait to get it from the library where it will definitely be backlogged for a while. I know I could buy it but like I said, I'm cheap. I also like to feel superior about supporting my local library. But mostly I'm cheap. timothycanny(at)gmail(dot)com.

  8. I'd love to win a copy of The Near Witch because I've read so many reviews of it and no one has had anything bad to say! I also love fantasy and paranormal YA, and this book just sounds amazing! Looking forward to reading one way or another. :)

  9. I keep hearing how good this book is! Gotta admit, when I first saw the title i thought it was going to be about an “almost” witch instead of Near as a town name.. hehe

  10. I love the cover of this book- I love that it is white (so it will stand out against all the other dark YA books) and I love that it is different- not following the trend of showing a dark haired girl in a bright red dress from the back.

    I tweeted! @coranne
