The king of Long City is dying. For Kai Zu, the news means more than it does for most former street rats in the small mountain stronghold, because he and the king’s daughter are close friends. Then the majestic ruler of the ghost dragons orders Kai to travel across the country to the Phoenix Empire, where the princess is learning statecraft. In a court filled with intrigue, Kai and his best (female) friend Yan must work together to help the princess escape and return to Long City. A refreshing mixture of magic, wit, and action, Fox and Phoenix is an auspicious debut!
Fox and Phoenix was just as I thought it would be. Awesome. From the first page to the last I was completely hooked. The book was a big mixture of fantasy, thriller and romance. Kai’s personality made me want to break out laughing at times, and others feel sorry for him. His personality played a big role in why I liked it so much, the way he handled his dilemma’s, and other situations, made me want to finish the book. There was absolutely nothing wrong with Fox and Phoenix and Beth Bernobich has an fantastic writing style.
This is her first YA novel and I think she has done a great job. The book’s a good read for anyone but it’s mostly for ages 11 and up. It comes out in just a few days and I think everyone should at least give it a try. Since I loved it so much I’m going to give Fox and Phoenix five stars.
