IceyBooks: Given the chance, would you change anything about your main character?
Inara Scott: No, I wouldn’t. Danica is really fully-fleshed out to me, and I can’t imagine her being anything different. She isn’t perfect-some probably think she’s naive-but I see her as someone with a really strong inner core. She’s a lot more innocent than some 9th graders, but in some ways she’s also incredibly aware of her power, and the fact that nothing in life is purely good or bad.
IceyBooks: If you could go back in time and meet anyone and say anything, who would it be and what would you say?
Inara Scott: There are tons of important religious leaders and political figures I’d like to have a conversation with, but the person who really comes to mind is my grandfather. I adored him, and lost him when I was in college. Now that I’m older, and think a lot about philosophy, I’d love to hear his opinion about things.
IceyBooks: Tell us how you landed your agent?
Inara Scott: Hard work and determination!! I wrote two books before I started the Delcroix series, and queried lots of agents for both books. All rejections. Then I wrote The Talents, and was rejected a lot for that, too. But one agent said YES, and that was all it took. I refused to give up. That’s the only way to be successful, if you ask me.
IceyBooks: Do you have any advice for aspiring young writers?
Inara Scott: See above! :) Have faith in yourself, and confidence in your writing, and keep trying. That doesn’t mean you think you’re perfect-learn from the rejections and constantly seek to improve your craft. Writing is a journey and publication is NOT the end. Make writing a part of your life, and the rejections won’t feel quite so painful. It’s all a part of the ride.
