Interview with Jeyn Roberts + Signed DARK INSIDE Giveaway

Posted by on May 18, 2012
Today on the blog, I’ve got the talented Jeyn Roberts, who’s juggled more careers than most. Her debut novel, DARK INSIDE, hit shelves last fall from Simon and Schuster YA. See her answers to my questions, and be sure to enter to win one of two signed copies of her book, right after the break.

Jeyn Roberts

IceyBooks: Describe DARK INSIDE in 7 words.

Jeyn Roberts: Scary, dark, apocalyptic, keep the light on.

IceyBooks: You’ve had quite a few careers, it seems! What made you come back to writing? Are you now a fulltime writer?

Jeyn Roberts: Yes, I’ve always wanted to be the kind of person that goes out and tries everything. Well, ok, not everything, but you get the idea. I’ve always been a writer. Even when I was playing in a band, I was still writing songs. Novel writing came a bit later. And yes, I am now a full-time writer. Hopefully I’ll get to continue doing it as long as possible.

IceyBooks: You were first published at the age of 16. Looking back now, do you have any advice for your teenage-writer self?

Jeyn Roberts: Oh yes! If I could go back, I’d tell myself to be more open to criticism. I used to take everything so personal. I wish someone had pointed out to me the value of having others point out my mistakes. As writers, we get so close to our characters and ideas. We make a lot of mistakes. Having people proof read and edit isn’t personal. I wish I had learned that earlier.

IceyBooks: Where did you find the inspiration for DARK INSIDE?

Jeyn Roberts: From dreams! When I was a teenager, I used to have a series of reoccurring dreams. I was always hiding out in dilapidated buildings with other people while some great evil terrorized us. Some of the scenes from Dark Inside are taken from actual dreams.

IceyBooks: Did you have any say in how the covers of DARK INSIDE and RAGE WITHIN turned out?

Jeyn Roberts: Writers rarely have any say in how the book covers turn out. I’ve heard some stories from writers who ended up with covers they hated. I was very fortunate. Both the UK and USA covers are brilliant. I love them so much!

Dark Inside (Dark Inside, #1)

Since the beginning of mankind, civilizations have fallen: the Romans, the Greeks, the Aztecs… and now us. Huge earthquakes rock the world. Cities are destroyed. But something even more awful is happening: An ancient evil has been unleashed, and it’s turning everyday people into hunters, killers, and crazies.

This is the world Mason, Aries, Clementine, and Michael are living in—or rather, trying to survive. Each is fleeing unspeakable horror, from murderous chaos to brutal natural disasters, and each is traveling the same road in a world gone mad.

Amid the throes of the apocalypse and clinging to love and meaning wherever it can be found, these four teens are on a journey into the heart of darkness—and to find each other and a place of safety.

Are you as excited for DARK INSIDE as I am? Thanks to the generous people at Simon and Schuster, I’ve got not one, but TWO signed copies of DARK INSIDE for two lucky readers! Fill out the Rafflecopter below. Good luck!
