Asma: What inspired you to write The Last Princess?
Galaxy Craze: I grew up in London and whenever we drove by Buckingham Palace I stared at the windows wondering what it would be like to actually live there. I started thinking about a young girl living inside the palace, a princess and her brother and sister. I imagined her daily life, what her bedroom looked like and all her beautiful clothes. I thought it would be interesting to see the Royal Family in times of serious trouble. I also wanted to show a princess who was loyal and strong–that became the character of Eliza.
Asma: Can you tell me more about your name Galaxy Craze?
Galaxy Craze: My mother was only eighteen years old when she had me. She was a hippie. In the hospital she was thinking of names like, Venus and Moon. One of my mom’s friends said, “Well, why don’t you just name her Galaxy?” And she did! But for a long time I thought I was named after the GALAXY chocolate bar.
Asma: What is your favorite book? Who is your favorite author?
Galaxy Craze: Oh, I love so many books and so many different authors. I love the book Eloise. I also love Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin and The Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys.
Asma: If you could dye your hair any color, which would it be?
Galaxy Craze: I’ve always wanted to try bright, platinum blond.
Asma: Where is your favorite vacationing place?
Galaxy Craze: Cornwall, England is beautiful and not too sunny or hot. I like Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard too. A weekend alone in my own house would also be great.
Asma: What is your favorite snack?
Galaxy Craze: Guacamole and chips.
Asma: What is your favorite time to write?
Galaxy Craze: Well, if I didn’t have two young children I would start early like 8:00 am and work all day into the night around nine or ten. In between I would make lots of cups of tea and eat cookies, take the dog for a walk. But as it is I have to work from school drop off hours. I usually get back at 10 am and can work until 3pm. Which is NOT enough time!!
