First Look: Cover Reveal for TIDES by Betsy Cornwell + Giveaway!

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a HUGE fan of all things mermaids. And today I’m STOKED to bring you the official cover for TIDES by Betsy Cornwell (Clarion/Harcourt, June 2013). Scroll down to read the synopsis, check out the pretty cover, and enter to win an ARC from the author herself!

When Noah Gallagher and his sister, Lo, go to live with their grandmother in her island cottage for the summer, they don’t expect much in the way of adventure. Noah has landed a marine biology internship, and Lo wants to draw and paint, perhaps even to vanquish her struggles with bulimia. They both hope to bond with their estranged grandmother and her partner. But then Noah tries to save a mysterious girl from drowning, and their summer takes a dramatic turn.

Mara is beautiful and aloof . . . and she has a voice like nothing Noah has ever heard before, silky and watery and deep. Noah and Lo could both use a friend their age on the remote islands, but something seems to be holding Mara back. What sort of secrets could she and her close-knit family be hiding? And will discovering them put Noah and Lo in danger?

This dreamlike, suspenseful story—deftly told from multiple points of view—dives deeply into selkie folklore while examining the fluid nature of love and family.

I love, love, LOVE the synopsis for this story. I've always found selkies to be fascinating subjects ever since watching The Secret of Roan Inish. The cover is so beautiful, though it would initially strike me as a Middle Grade novel if I saw it on a shelf.

Thank you SO much for the giveaway, Betsy and Hafsah! I can't wait to read this book :-)

Sounds like an interesting premise for a story, but having two characters named Noah and Mara seems a little….unimaginative? I mean, two characters with the same names and in a YA paranormal romance novel just kind of rubs me the wrong way. You wouldn't write a book and name the main characters Harry and Hermione, right?

Ummm, wow. There is already a YA series that has the SAME names for the main characters… that combined with the boy meets selkie theme… unoriginal much?
