When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?
Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.
Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.
Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away
Jennifer Rush bursts onto the YA scene with a fast-paced thriller that will leave you breathless and wishing for more. Reminiscent of Dan Krokos’s FALSE MEMORY, with altered memories and secret government agencies, ALTERED is a non-stop thrill ride made for the masses.
I dove into ALTERED with pretty much no expectations – aside from being in love with the cover. Before I knew it, I had flipped over the last page and had to remember to breathe. It was fast. Very fast. The action is non-stop – guns, knives, death and soldiers on the run. It was pretty awesome. I love stories with characters on the run and plots so fast you forget to breathe. So I really enjoyed ALTERED.
I did have a small problem with the relationship between Anna, our protagonist, and Sam, the mysterious leader of the pack of altered boys. It seemed like Anna could only think of Sam and Sam, well, it seemed like Sam didn’t care about Anna at all. I love Sam, don’t get me wrong. But there just didn’t seem to be enough build-up between the two of them before their first kiss. I think it has to do with the plot which was so fast, there wasn’t enough time for them to focus on anything else. But I’m sure we’ll see more of their togetherness in book two (hint-hint Jennifer ;)
Anyway, romance is a side part in Jennifer Rush’s debut. ALTERED is all about it’s plot – which is basically four (hot) boys on the run along with a girl who has a mysterious link to them all, not just because they all lived in her basement. I loved the fact that Rush was able to make all four boys stand out on their own. One was hilariously funny, one was a bibliophile I just had to love, one was so mean I had to feel sorry for, and well, there was Sam, the mysterious, dark-haired guy I couldn’t help but fall for.
I’m really excited for book two – where we’ll learn more about the characters themselves and maybe even see some depth to Sam and Anna’s relationship. All in all, ALTERED was a quick read with a fast-paced plot, amazing characters and non-stop action – you’ll want to start off the new year with that. Trust me.
