I’m today’s stop in the DARKNESS DWELLERS Blog Tour hosted by Bloomsbury. The author of the Kiki Strike series, Kirsten Miller, has a guest post about her books today! Read on.
Thanks so much for inviting me to write a guest post for your fabulous blog! (Love the design as well as your book reviews.) I was told that my post can be on a “topic of my choosing.” You might want to reconsider. I’m afraid I share the same interests as the narrator of my Kiki Strike series of books. (The latest, The Darkness Dwellers is out this month!) I’m fascinated by—in no particular order—Bigfoot, giant squid, man-eating rats (and their ordinary cousins), mythology, sewers, ghosts, graffiti, underground cities, secret societies . . . and the list goes on.
If you’re familiar with the Kiki Strike trilogy, you know the books follow the Irregulars, a group of delinquent former Girl Scouts who discover a forgotten “city” beneath New York. Man-eating rats play a big part in the first two books, (Inside the Shadow City and The Empress’s Tomb). So do renegade graffiti artists, evil princesses and hungry ghosts.
When it was time to cook up the third novel in the Kiki Strike series, I wanted to include a few more of my favorite things. I started with a dash of secret societies. The new book, The Darkness Dwellers, takes its name from an elusive organization that’s devoted to exploring and patrolling the catacombs—a vast (and dangerous) network of tunnels that snake beneath Paris, France.
The Darkness Dwellers are fictional, of course. But believe it or not, they’re based on a real group of Parisians known as La Mexicaine De Perforation (The Mexican Consolidated Drilling Authority). No joke—that’s what they call themselves. They briefly achieved fame in 2004, when police stumbled upon a fully-functional movie theatre that the group had built deep below the streets of Paris in a forbidden section of the catacombs. The moment I read about the discovery, I instantly knew that La Mexicaine De Perforation would find their way into one of my Kiki Strike novels.
And so they have. In The Darkness Dwellers, two of the Irregulars must join forces with the Parisian organization in order to kick a little bad guy (and girl) butt. And before the book reaches its shocking (okay—shockingly hairy) conclusion, the Irregulars will encounter a few more of my interests, which include (but aren’t limited to) sewers, zombies, and flesh-nibbling beetles.
I haven’t managed to work Bigfoot into the Kiki Strike series . . . yet. Perhaps there will have to be a fourth book after all!
Life will never be the same for Ananka Fishbein after she ventures into an enormous sinkhole near her New York City apartment. A million rats, delinquent Girl Scouts out for revenge, and a secret city below the streets of Manhattan combine in this remarkable novel about a darker side of New York City you have only just begun to know about…
What’s happening in New York City?
A Haunted Mansion.
Six fierce friends with fiercer secrets.
Ananka is in danger of being sent to a remote boarding school; Kiki’s life (as always) is in danger, Betty seems to have found love in all the wrong places, and Oona….well, Oona’s the one in the most serious trouble of all. From Chinatown to Fifth Avenue, whether they are rescuing kidnapped children or resuscitating an ancient Empress at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Irregulars have a knack for finding trouble, and putting it out of its misery.
First they ventured deep under New York to save the city itself. Then things got personal as the Irregulars ventured into a haunted mansion in Chinatown to uncover an evil twin. Now, in the third installment of bestselling author Kirsten Miller’s Kiki Strike series, this delightful group of delinquent geniuses jump feet first into a fast-paced international pursuit, going underground in Paris to pursue a pair of treacherous royals who have killed Kiki’s parents. With a dash of romance, a fresh take on good manners, and loads of butt-kicking bravery, Kiki, Betty, Ananka and the other Irregulars sharpen their amazing skills in this highly anticipated new adventure.
