Interview with Laurie Crompton – Author of BLAZE (or Love in the Time of Supervillains) Plus Giveaway!

BLAZE (or Love in the Time of Supervillains) is a Sourcebooks debut coming this February and it sounds pretty awesome – the title alone was enough to pique my interest! And today, I’m excited to have the author for an interview and a *signed* ARC giveaway! Read on!

IceyBooks: Describe BLAZE in five words.

Laurie Crompton: Kickass Geek Girl Fights Back
(I realize that making Kick Ass into one word is cheating but Blaze is so totally kick ass there’s no other way to put it)

IceyBooks: Where did you find the inspiration for BLAZE?

Laurie Crompton: When I was in high school I spent a lot of time reading comics and also driving my younger siblings around. Comics are such a great escape and I’ve always wished I could draw them, so the next best thing for me was to create this character who has all the drawing skills I lack. My chauffeur duties meant I missed out on hanging out with friends a lot, but my brother and sister and I created our own fun along the way and I wanted to capture a bit of that. I was a bit of an outsider, but loved my family and made the best of my situation which is what Blaze does.

IceyBooks: How long did it take you to write BLAZE – was it an easy journey to publication?

Laurie Crompton: The original manuscript went in a very different direction and so I’m not exaggerating when I say this book was years in the making. Also, Blaze was not the first book I wrote. But once I found my way things happened very quickly and my agent actually ended up selling my first three novels to two different publishers within a six month period of time. I guess you could say my journey to publication was pretty bumpy with a nice swoop near the end. Of course, the end of that journey is just the beginning of another one!

IceyBooks: Is there anyway you can relate to your MC?

Laurie Crompton: Blaze is a total geek, which I completely relate to, but she also has a confidence that I admire. Also, I did spray paint my first car hot pink when I was seventeen. It’s a detail from my past that’s mirrored in Blaze’s story in a fun way.

IceyBooks: If you could dye your hair any color, what would you choose and why?

Laurie Boyle CromptonLaurie Crompton: Absolutely PINK! Actually, I do lighten my hair so I should say ‘Absolutely Blonde,’ but my inner girlie-girl would much rather go with pink. Anytime I see someone sporting pink hair it always makes me smile.

Thanks so much for having me!

I love that you painted your car pink. And you could totally pull off pink hair (although you rock the blonde hair). Sooo looking forward to reading BLAZE!
