I revealed the cover for Rachele Alpine’s CANARY a few months ago, and I’m excited to exclusively reveal the trailer for her debut! First, check out the cover, read the synopsis, and watch the trailer! Even better, Rachele is giving away a one-of-a-kind annotated ARC of CANARY, complete with notes about the book, herself, and inspiration. She’s also highlighted favorite lines and sections, created a playlist, marked things that were changed in the final version…all that good stuff!
Staying quiet will destroy her, but speaking up will destroy everyone.
Kate Franklin’s life changes for the better when her dad lands a job at Beacon Prep, an elite private school with one of the best basketball teams in the state. She begins to date a player on the team and quickly gets caught up in a world of idolatry and entitlement, learning that there are perks to being an athlete.
But those perks also come with a price. Another player takes his power too far and Kate is assaulted at a party. Although she knows she should speak out, her dad’s vehemently against it and so, like a canary sent into a mine to test toxicity levels and protect miners, Kate alone breathes the poisonous secrets to protect her dad and the team. The world that Kate was once welcomed into is now her worst enemy, and she must decide whether to stay silent or expose the corruption, destroying her father’s career and bringing down a town’s heroes.
I’m a high school English teacher by day, MFA student by night and YA writer during any time in between. I like to write with a big cup of coffee, good music and my puppy by my side.
And here’s a little bit from Rachele herself!
I’m offering up an annotated ARC of CANARY. This means that I’ve written ALL OVER IT! It’s full of doodles and comments about things like my favorite passages, the passages that were the hardest to write, parts that changed in the final version, bloopers, what I was thinking when I wrote a scene, a playlist for CANARY and where some of my ideas came from. Basically, you get to peek inside my head when you’re reading!
When I worked with the trailer designer, the two of us really wanted to focus on the atmosphere of Kate’s new school and the power the basketball team held. Kate writes a blog called, All My Truths. Each entry starts with “Today’s Truth” at the top and she then reveals something that she learned that day. I wanted the book trailer to reflect her progression of truths. The first is innocent, but as the trailer goes on, it shows that perhaps the truths she is revealing are things that many may want to stay hidden.
