Blog Tour: Guest Post with Jessica Shirvington, Author of ENDLESS

The wait for ENDLESS is almost (FINALLY) over! The fourth book in Jessica Shirvington’s dazzling EMBRACE series from Sourcebooks hit stores on October 1st, 2013 and is it just me, or are these covers just getting better and better? Anyway, I’m excited to have the author here detailing her journey to publication! Read on.

Embrace (Endless, #4)

My road to publication was quite fast. At the time I felt every hard day as though they were impossibly long and I was sure only disappointment waited at the end. And that’s not because I’m a pessimistic kind of person. I just wasn’t sure that I was good enough. I was trying something new and whilst I had thrown myself into it 110%, I knew that didn’t automatically mean I would succeed.
I wrote the first draft of my first novel, EMBRACE, in relatively quick time – about 6 weeks. I then spent 5 months rewriting it numerous times before I let anyone read it. Finally, when I felt that the manuscript was as polished as I could make it, I was ready to start looking for an agent who might represent me.

Whilst I didn’t know anyone in the publishing industry I was lucky enough to randomly end up in a conversation with a good friend one day at an Easter barbeque and he mentioned he had a friend who was friends with the particular agent I’d had my eye on.
Through a series of phone calls and nail-biting moments I was finally given her address to send in my first three chapters. To be honest with you, I really believed it would end there, but on my birthday (of all days) the agent rang me and asked me to get the full manuscript to her by the next morning so she could take it away on vacation with her.

A week later I had an agent. Three weeks after that I had a three book deal with Hachette Australia.
It was amazing! And daunting!! I had written one book but there was still so much ahead of me and I constantly worried that I would stumble at some point during the editing process or in delivering the new manuscripts. But more importantly, I knew without a shadow of doubt that this was exactly what I wanted to be doing with my life.

Eventually, other international markets started to take on the 5 book series, and today it has sold into roughly a dozen countries, which is thrilling!
ENDLESS is just about to be released in the U.S and I have just finished writing the 5th and final book in the series, EMPOWER. On top of that, I have my first stand-alone on the way in the U.S. It is called ONE PAST MIDNIGHT and will be coming out in 2014. Writing a stand-alone was another challenge for me and one I was certain I wanted to tackle. I couldn’t be happier with the results! And…I have a two book series in the pipeline that I am currently working on.

So all in all, my road to publication has definitely been a nail-biting affair, but also, extremely fulfilling. Writing books is now simply what I do. It is what I will do for as long as there are readers out there willing to read what I write.
