Asma’s First GIF Post – First Lines That Hook

Hello everyone! Ladies and Gentleman, I present to you…. *drum roll* Asma! (Don’t worry this isn’t all about me, though I have to say, I am rather interesting.)

You know how there are books with first lines that are pretty lame and not at all interesting? And then there are those first sentence hookers that make you go all:

I personally think these five are amazing:

Falling Kingdoms

First line: She’d never killed before tonight.
My thoughts: Yes, I picked this one up for the cool cover, but I love this line too. I mean, killed me before? I’m hooked.

UNBREAKABLE by Kami Garcia
First line: As my bare feet sink into the wet earth, I tried not to think about the dead bodies buried beneath me.
My thoughts: It sounds pretty creepy. ‘Nuff said.

DUALED by Elsie Chapman
First line: I’ve buried nearly everyone I love.
My thoughts: Doesn’t it make you want to figure out more? Like why she did that?

PROPHECY by Ellen Oh
First line: People feared Kira.
My thoughts: It makes you want to see why the people fear a girl right?

UNBREATHABLE by Hafsah Laziaf
First Line: The last time I stood here on this hill, Father was alive, Earth was thought to be destroyed, and I was human.
My thoughts: I haven’t really read any books where the story takes place on a different planet, but this sounds pretty cool. And the MC suddenly discovers she isn’t human?

Oh wait, one more.

The Bad Beginning

THE BAD BEGINNING by Lemony Snicket
First line: If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book.
My thoughts: Must I really say anything? Lemony Snicket is THE best.

And if I have to some up all my feels for these lines AND whichever of these books that I’ve read?

Those are my picks, how about you guys? What are some of your favorite first lines?

Yesssss for GIFs! And also first lines! And also Lemony Snicket! I mean, who doesn’t want to read a book, where the first line tells you NOT to read it? Talk about reverse psychology.

I love you, Asma! You had me at Minions! :)

Ya know something? I don’t think I pay too much attention to first lines. I guess I should! The only one that comes to mind is, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” Sadly, I’ve never even read A Tale of Two Cities! How I know it, I have no clue.
