Q&A with Shannon Stoker, Author of THE COLLECTION Plus Giveaway

Posted by on February 5, 2014

Today, we’re excited to share an interview with Shannon Stoker, author of THE REGISTRY, and its sequel, THE COLLECTION.

The Collection

IceyBooks: Describe your dystopian series, The Registry.

Shannon Stoker: In the future American girls are sold into marriages, while American boys are required to serve in the armed forces. The Registry series tells the story of Mia and Andrew, two individuals who fall in to these categories. They go against the grain and decide to reject their prescribed lives. Escape is not so easy though, since they are trailed by Mia’s former intended, and escape is not enough, because of their ties to the people left at home. The Registry examines the dystopian genre from a global standpoint and the reader gets a view of many different ideologies.

IceyBooks: Many novels are inspired by one sentence or question, was there one that sparked THE REGISTRY?

Shannon Stoker: Actually, my friend once said: “I will never join Facebook, Facebook is evil.” I thought to myself, I’ll show her an evil Facebook, and created The Registry. I think it’s funny that now she is an active member of the Facebook community.

IceyBooks: Do you have a favorite line that was removed from the original draft of THE COLLECTION?

Shannon StokerI’m not sad to see the line leave the book, but I wrote: “At least give them some respect and say new adult.”. I thought this was a shout out to the new adult genre, but the line didn’t go with the flow of the scene.

IceyBooks: Say THE REGISTRY is being adapted to a movie – who would portray your main character?

Shannon Stoker: I think about this all the time and have the hardest time coming up with suggestions! For Mia I would have to pick Elle Fanning, but I would be open to any actress . For Andrew and Carter most of the actors I have in mind are starting to age out of the roles!

IceyBooks: Give us the three:
Movies you can’t wait to see:

Shannon Stoker:
Divergent
Winter’s Tale (Which my husband promised to take me to see for Valentine’s day)
Obsidian (Which has been optioned recently, but I can’t friggin wait!)

IceyBooks: Books you can’t wait to read

Shannon Stoker:
The One by Kiera Cass (I must know who America chooses!)
The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings (Lindsay Cummings is the funnest to follow on twitter)
Hunted by DJ DeSmyter (This is on the top of my pile!)

IceyBooks: Random facts about you

Shannon Stoker:
I competed (and lost) on an episode of Four Weddings
I LOVE Saturday Night Live and read everything I can about the show
When I was a little girl I used to write stories and always end them with the line “and they trashed the place”.

Shannon Stoker lives in DeKalb, IL. She received her undergraduate and law degree from Northern Illinois University where she now works as the Research Integrity Coordinator. It’s not a stretch to say she’s a die hard Huskie fan!

When she’s not working or writing Shannon spends the majority of her time playing with her terrier mix Nucky or her husband.

She loves watching horror movies, including those straight to DVD classics most people never heard of. If she wasn’t an attorney or an author she would have been a beautician and is constantly bugging her friends to come over and let Shannon play with their hair.

Thanks to HarperCollins, we’ve got a copy of THE COLLECTION for one lucky US resident.
